In 1908, Wilbur Wright is quoted as saying:

I confess that in 1901 I said to my brother Orville that man would not fly for fifty years…Ever since, I have distrusted myself and avoided all predictions.

The brothers are credited with making the first controlled, powered, heavier-than-air flight on December 17, 1903.

There really is much in common with the Wright brothers attempts at flight and Eric’s attempts at achieving fusion.  The wright brothers had a competetor funded by $50,000 in government money. This was big bucks back then. Just like Europe’s ITER today.
We know today that the design of their competition could never fly.  Perhaps they will figure out someday that tokamaks cannot fly either.
In any case it does seem that the government has a terrible record of deciding which research projects to fund.  Some things just never change.
